Europa League: Round-up

November 2, 2017

Cologne put five past BATE Borisov as they continue to be liberated from their troubles in the Bundesliga. Elsewhere, a Davie Selke brace gave Hertha Berlin a win but Hoffenheim were denied by a last-minute equalizer.

Cologne 5-2 BATE
(Zoller 16', Osako 54', 82', Guirassy 63', Jojic 90' - Milunovic 31', Signevich 33')

Cologne turned on the style to beat BATE Borisov and pick up their first win in Europe this season.

The Billy Goats opened the scoring through Simon Zoller, who raced clear and poked the ball home. But BATE hit back with a quickfire double through Nemanja Milunovic and Nikolai Signevich, who scored a sensational overhead kick.

But Cologne kept their heads and produced a rousing second-half display to turn the game on its head. A fine chest-and-volley by half-time substitute Yuya Osako made it 2-2 and Cologne restored their lead through a fine Sehrou Guirassy free-kick.

Osako notched up his second, sliding in Leonardo Bittencourt's pinpoint cross from the left, and another substitute, Milos Jojic, headed in a fifth. Still without a win in the Bundesliga, Cologne will be hoping to transfer their sudden scoring success to their next league fixture - a home game against Hoffenheim on Sunday.

Hertha Berlin 2-0 Zorya Luhansk
(Selke 16', 73')

Hertha Berlin fielded their youngest starting eleven in over four years as they picked up their first Europa League win of the season.

In fact, it was Hertha's first win in the competition for 2,879 days and they had Davie Selke to thank. The striker scored a goal in each half to put Hertha back in the running to qualify from Group J.

Selke opened the scoring with a fine header and, although Hertha labored to make the win safe, they eventually doubled their lead in the second half when Selke rounded the Zorya keeper to rubber stamp the victory.

Hertha are bottom of their group but, with four points on the board, are only three points behind group leaders Ostersunds.

Basaksehir 1-1 Hoffenheim
(Visca 90+3' - Grillitsch 47')

Hoffenheim suffered a crushing late blow in Turkey with an Edin Visca equalizer deep into stoppage time denying Julian Nagelsmann's side what would have been a vital three points.

After a tight first half, Hoffenheim flew out of the blocks after the restart and took the lead courtesy of Florian Grillitsch's quality strike, finishing off a fine move with a finish that went in off the underside of the bar.

Hoffenheim appeared to be closing the game out and claiming a win that would have seen them move to within two points of group leaders Ludogorets, but the German side threw it away in the third of four added minutes. A low shot from Visca on the edge of the area crept into the bottom corner, sending the home fans into delirium at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim stadium.

The result leaves Hoffenheim facing two key games against Braga and Ludogorets to save their debut European campaign.
