AFCON 2025 Final: Is the real winner Senegal or Morocco?

April 10, 2026

Senegal is taking Africa's football governing body, CAF, to court after it was stripped of its AFCON title and handed over to Morocco. What started on the pitch is now a battle for the game's credibility.

Senegal is challenging the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after CAF's appeals boardstripped the country of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the final by walking off the pitch in protest at a contentious late penalty. Senegal's government and football federation have condemned the decision as unprecedented and unjust, alleging possible corruption and calling for an independent international investigation. The CAF ruling gave Morocco a 3–0 win in the January 18 final, despite Senegal returning to the field and later scoring the decisive goal in extra time. The case now sits with CAS, where proceedings are ongoing as Senegal seeks to overturn the decision and restore what it considers its rightful title. Experts say the controversy is damaging the image of African football.
