Chikungunya fever is no longer just a tropical disease. In Europe, infections are increasingly occurring through local transmission. In 2025, France recorded 788 confirmed cases, including one near the German border. The virus is spread by the Asian tiger mosquito, an invasive species that has been expanding across Europe for years. As its range grows, so does the risk of outbreaks in new regions. Experts warn that it may only be a matter of time before locally transmitted cases also occur in more European countries. Monitoring, early detection and targeted mosquito control will be key to limiting further spread.
