On February 9, 2026, the war crimes trial of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci enters a decisive phase with closing statements at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Hailed by many ethnic Albanians as a liberation leader, Thaci now faces charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes linked to the 1998–99 Kosovo War, a conflict in which Kosovo sought independence from Serbia.

As protests in support of Thaci and the others on trial have taken place across the Balkans, the court's verdict could shape Kosovo's politics, foreign policy and its standing on the international stage.
