German Chancellor Merz on inaugural visit to Turkey

Friedrich Merz has traveled to Turkey for his inaugural visit as chancellor. Talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will center on the important bilateral relationship between the countries. After all, Germany has millions of citizens and residents with Turkish roots.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz begins his first official visit to Turkey, aiming to strengthen ties with President Erdogan. Key topics include Turkey's role in ending the war in Ukraine, its influence in Gaza peace efforts, and defense cooperation. Germany supports Ankara's air force modernization and seeks help on migration and EU integration. Human rights concerns, however, continue to strain the relationship.
