How bamboo can save homes in Kinshasa

Every year, thousands of people in Kinshasa lose their homes in landslides and floods. The changing climatemeans the Democratic Republic of Congo is now hit regularly with extreme rainfall. To protect vulnerable communities, climate activist Bertin Mbuya is leading the Bamboo Green Wall project, planting fast‑growing bamboo on the outskirts of the city to stabilize the sandy soil. With thousands of trees now in the ground, the roots help prevent erosion and slow the formation of dangerous gullies. As urban growth continues, his team is focusing on planting trees, educating residents and improving air quality in one of Africa’s largest cities.
