How Fiji became 'ground zero' in the Pacific drug trade

Fiji, once a transit hub, is now emerging as a key node in the rapidly expanding global drug trade, fueling addiction and a surge in HIV infections. DW speaks with Fijian journalist Lice Movono about the country's escalating crisis.

Fiji was once part of a "Pacific drug highway," moving narcotics from the Americas to Australia and New Zealand. It is now increasingly a consumption and storage point — "ground zero" — with drugs stockpiled and used locally.

Meanwhile, drug use has become highly visible, with syringes found on beaches and near villages. What was once largely hidden is now a widespread public issue.
