How USAID cuts could result in higher HIV transmission

Kenya cut HIV infections dramatically — but now donor-funded condoms are disappearing. With access shrinking, millions may be at risk. What does this mean for those most affected?

In Kenya, sex workers are facing rising HIV risks as free condom supplies dry up after US aid cuts. Three condoms now cost about $1.

Advocates warn that shortages are hitting sex workers especially hard. They have an HIV rate of around 30%, which is far above the national average of 3%.

Clinics are reporting empty dispensers, while officials cite funding gaps and market limits. Health workers fear Kenya could reverse decades of HIV prevention gains if access is not quickly restored.
