ICE in Minneapolis: 'Stop killing us'
US federal agents have shot and killed another US citizen in Minneapolis. The brutal killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti has triggered shock, anger and mass protests across the country.

Anger over killed protesters in Minneapolis

Outpouring of fury and sorrow
Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was shot by a border patrol officer from Customs and Border Protection. This agency is currently carrying out joint raids with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in US cities on the instructions of the US government.
ICU nurse who cared for veterans
The victim of the more recent shooting, Alex Pretti, worked in the intensive care unit of a hospital for veterans. He regularly took part in protests against police violence. The American Nurses Association said they were "deeply concerned for the safety of nurses" due to a rise in incidents involving federal law enforcement
Governor tells ICE to leave Minnesota
In Minneapolis and other cities across the US, thousands of people are taking to the streets to protest against ICE and the border police. Minnesota's Democratic governor, Tim Walz, called on US President Trump to 'remove the thousands of violent, untrained police officers from the state.'
Street clashes in 'sanctuary city'
Following the death of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, violent clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement. Minneapolis is considered a "sanctuary city" for migrants, meaning that local police only cooperate with federal immigration authorities to a limited extent
Five-year-old boy arrested and detained
Just a few days earlier, ICE agents in Minneapolis had arrested a five-year-old boy on his way home from preschool. Liam Conejo Ramos was taken to a family detention center with his father. The family from Ecuador had applied for asylum in the US in 2024. There was no deportation order against the father.
Remembering Nicole Renée Good
On January 7, US citizen Nicole Renée Good was shot dead in her car by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. The mother of three also wanted to protest against the deportation raids in the city. According to US authorities, the police officer fired in self-defense. Video footage shows that Good was trying to drive away from ICE agents.
ICE in danger of funding cuts
People also took to the streets in Washington where the growing outrage over police violence could lead to another government shutdown. Democratic senators have announced that they intend to vote next week against a bipartisan bill to fund government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE.
