No option but to disappear, says Uganda's Bobi Wine

January 23, 2026

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine told DW he is in hiding after a military raid on his home, which he blames on forces loyal to President Museveni and his son, army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Wine said his family is under house arrest, and he rejected going to court over disputed election results, arguing Uganda's judiciary serves the regime.

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has said he is in hiding after a military raid on his home following a disputed election that he claims he won, but which declared President Yoweri Museveni the victor. Uganda's election on January 15 ended with another term for Museve.

Wine said his family is under house arrest, and that army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba — Museveni's son — has threatened him, leaving Wine fearing for his safety. Wine said he has no faith in Uganda's courts and is instead urging Ugandans to pursue nonviolent resistance.

DW could not independently verify Bobi Wine's location.
