US President Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan calls for Hamas to lay down its arms and have no future role in governing Gaza. But while the militant group is weakened, it is still in charge in the territory — and reluctant to give up power.

More than two years after Israel began its war against Hamas in Gaza, the Palestinian militant group remains a powerful force — armed, organized and still in control of key areas like Khan Younis. Despite losing top leaders and facing weakened allies, Hamas continues to recruit fighters and operate through tunnels.

The US-backed Gaza peace plan aims to sideline Hamas, but key questions remain: Who will enforce disarmament? And can the unpopular Palestinian Authority take over?
