Tourists visiting a popular Rome landmark are in for an unwelcome surprise: They'll now have to pay to see the Trevi Fountain. Authorities say that will help to preserve the structure for future generations.

Rome has introduced a €2 (about $2.40) fee to view the Trevi Fountain up close, aiming to manage overcrowding and fund maintenance of the Baroque landmark. While some visitors question paying for access to a public space, most tourists say the small charge is worth it. City officials expect at least €6 million a year from the new system, as more of Rome's major sites adopt entry fees to cope with mass tourism.
