Uganda's tense election hit by widespread delays

Ugandans have voted in tense elections widely expected to extend President Yoweri Museveni's four decades of power. Ahead of the vote, the government had shut down the internet in a move the UN called deeply worrying.

Ugandans voted in a tense general election marked by delays after biometric machines failed at the start of polling. Heavy security and a nationwide internet shutdown heightened concerns over transparency, though voting later proceeded calmly.  In the run-up to the elections, rights groups had reported widespread intimidation of the opposition.
