Ukraine to receive EU's €90 billion loan despite setbacks

Not all EU member states backed the interest-free loan to support Ukraine's defense in the grinding war with Russia. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said it would only need to be repaid once Ukraine receives reparations.

The €90 billion ($105 billion) deal for the next two years was reached after earlier plans to use frozen Russian assets failed, with Belgium seeking guarantees against potential retaliation that the bloc could not provide.

Meanwhile, with Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic voicing opposition, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned that the decision would bring Europe closer to war.
