When freedom of expression hit a wall in Zambia

Zambia abruptly canceled an international conference on human rights in the digital age — allegedly after Chinese interference. Questions are now swirling about censorship, sovereignty, and the shrinking space for free expression in southern Africa.

Days before RightsCon — the world's largest conference on human rights and technology — was due to open in Zambia at the start of May, it was abruptly called off.

Zambia in said the event conflicted with national values, but the US-based organizers said Chinahad put the government under pressure.
