The Earth’s Metabolism

Markus Reichstein from the Max-Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry likes to spend his time on the beeches - trees that can live two to three hundred years in the right atmospheric humidity and soil conditions. But now, as the climate changes, so are those conditions.

It’s up to Reichstein and his fellow researchers, with the help of measurements and mathematics, to find out more about how the climate affects vegetation, atmosphere and soil and the metabolism of carbon and water in these eco-systems.
