Ireland's move away from peat

Peatlands make up only 3% of the earth's surface, but they store at least twice as much carbon as all of its forests. As a carbon sink this is great news, but when that peat is collected, dried and burned – not so much. Ireland has been relying on peat as a source of energy for centuries, but the EU member has started to phase it out. Bogs there are now being helped to recover, despite tradition.
