In Turkey, high inflation has made everything more expensive – for many, living costs have soared so much that they are just barely scraping by. Finding affordable housing has become virtually impossible in some cities. During the COVID pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, building projects were put on hold. By the time construction was due to be picked up again, the price increase had hit, pushing construction prices up even more.

Oosterwold in the Netherlands, on the outskirts of Amsterdam, is an experiment that lets residents build a town from the ground up. The residents decide together what their town should look like. People can live there as they like, be it in a house or a tent. There aren't many rules, but one of them is that the town has to be green. Even here, prices for new plots have multiplied.
