German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Berlin early Tuesday before taking off for his trip to Israel.

"Our situation is indispensable in order to forge a common understanding of the situation in the Middle East," Scholz said in the German capital alongside the Jordanian leader.

"We share a common goal. We want to avoid a conflagration, a wider war in the region," Scholz said. He called on Lebanon-based Hezbollah and Iran to not intervene in the war.

Scholz praised Germany's partnership with Jordan during the meeting. The chancellor also reiterated his condemnation of Hamas' terror attacks on Israel on October 7, which left over 1,300 people dead.

In addition, Scholz advocated for humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip. The enclave's supply of electricity, food and water is deteriorating, with Palestinians there having nowhere else to go due to closed borders with Israel and Egypt.

During his remarks, Abdullah lamented the loss of life in Israel and Gaza and urged a stop to violence.

"The threat of this war expanding is real," Abdullah said. "The cost this will bring on all of us is too much to bear."

Abdullah also said Palestinian refugees in Gaza must not be forced to go to Jordan or Egypt.

"That is a red line, because I think that is the plan by certain of the usual suspects to try and create de facto issues on the ground," Abdullah said. " No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt."

"This is a situation that has to be handled within Gaza and the West Bank," Abdullah added. "And you don't have to carry this out on the shoulders of others."
