Germany's Baerbock says Iran has taken Mideast to 'edge of a precipice'

Iran's overnight attack on Israel has has taken the entire Middle East region to the "edge of a precipice," German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said, calling for all sides to refrain from causing further escalation.

"I call on all actors in the region to act with restraint," she said. "The spiral of escalation must be interrupted."

"The millions of women, men and children in Israel, in Iran and in the entire region, who couldn't sleep last night for fear: None of them want this escalation."

She also called on Iran to stop any attacks by its regional proxies, saying "a regional conflagration would have incalculable consequences.

Over the past decades, Iran has built a network of proxies across the Middle East, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas, a range of Iraqi Shiite militias and the Houthis in Yemen.

Baerbock said that Germany "condemns the direct Iranian attack on the state territory of Israel in the strongest terms. Israel has Germany's full solidarity."

"With its aggressive behavior aimed at destabilizing a whole region, Iran is isolated," she went on. "And Israel's capabilities have shown: Israel is strong."

Baerbock's remarks came after she chaired a meeting of the government's Crisis Reponse Center in Berlin, at which Iran's assault was discussed.
